About
The Translate research group is located at the School of Information, Pratt Institute, New York. It is led by Dr. Sai Shruthi Chivukula, Assistant Professor in Information Experience Design (IXD) program in Pratt Institute. The group’s work is published in prominent platforms, including CHI and DIS, to reach a broad audience and foster ethical practices in the design community.
At the Translate research group, we delve into the ethical dimensions of technology and design practices. Our work focuses on understanding practitioners' ethical awareness, the complexity of ethical issues, ethical actions, and responsibilities in their everyday design work. We translate these investigations into practical resources to support ethical decision-making, offering methods for reflecting on ethical responsibility and actionable tools for ethical reflection. Research Areas
-
Using practice-led approaches, we describe and investigate ethical dimensions of technology and design practitioners about their ethical awareness, complexity, action, and responsibility in their everyday design work. What are the existing and new ethics-focused methods and tools for design? We translate these investigations into resources to assist in ethical decision making, methods to reflect about ethical responsibility, and actionable supports for ethical reflection.
-
We investigate current tech regulation and policy knowledge that exists for ethical design for practice and education. How is tech regulation and policy knowledge imparted and embedded in design education and practice? We intend to translate regulatory knowledge and vocabulary into design vocabulary for technology and design practitioners to better embed tech regulation into everyday design work.
-
We translate findings from other research areas into design pedagogy and theory asking questions: What is happening in the background to explain how practitioners are building their conceptual knowledge around design or ethics? How can we embed ethics and regulation into design pedagogy?
